Please note: due to the recent book sale and an upcoming facility move we are unable to accept any donations at this time. We apologize for any inconvenience and will work to get back up to normal operations as quickly as possible. In the meantime, if you have up to 3 boxes or bags of items to donate, you can drop those off at your nearest Seattle Public Library branch location. Thank you for your patience!

In order to raise money for The Seattle Public Library we try to sell as many of the donated books as we can. To help us do so please donate only new or gently used materials as we may not be able to sell those in poor condition.

Rare and other books of more than everyday value are gratefully accepted.

We will provide you with a federal tax deduction form for all your donations.

WHAT ITEMS ARE NOT ACCEPTED?

• Please! No items with mold or excessive wear (torn pages/dirt and/or stains) – we need to be able to resell what you donate
• Reader’s Digest condensed books
• Magazines & Newspapers
• Encyclopedias
• Business, computer, travel guides and textbooks published more than 5 years ago
• VHS & Cassettes
• Romance paperback books
• Art prints and posters

WHERE TO DROP OFF BOOKS?

During operating hours you can donate books through the library itself. Due to limited space, branch libraries can only accept up to 3 boxes of donated materials. Please give the books to a library employee so the donation does not get mixed up with returned books. If you have more than 3 boxes to donate, please visit us at The Friends’ Sorting Center at the address below.

Our Sorting Center is on the 2^nd floor of The Washington Talking Book & Braille Library building. The building’s garage slopes up to our back door. To drop off donations you’ll take a right off of 9^th Ave. into our garage. Head straight back and as you get closer to the loading dock, look to your right, you’ll see our back door, usually hidden between two SPL Mobile Services trucks. Ring the bell to the left of the door and we’ll grab a cart or two and help you unload.

Thanks for your interest in volunteering as a book sorter.  Currently, we have filled all of our volunteer slots at our sorting facility and have a large waiting list.  Please check back in the future to see if we need more volunteers at that time.  You might also consider applying as a volunteer at our Friendshop in the Central Library.  For information about that opportunity, please click here.

Since 2009, the Friends of the Seattle Public Library has been honored to receive annual grants from the Renee B. Fisher Foundation to provide classroom books for teachers in high-need (Title 1) Seattle public schools.  Through these grants, each teacher receives a $100 voucher to purchase books for their classrooms at the many Friends’ Book Sales.  So far, over 400 teachers from 35 schools have been given nearly 29,700 books new homes in their Seattle classrooms, ranging from K – 12.  In 2016, the Friends distributed over $9000 in teacher vouchers.  The total distribution through 2016 was over $22,000.
